about our history
Hey Machinery was started in 1929 by William Hey and joined later by his sons Bill and Lester Hey. Hey Machinery did many different things in the early years but found producing wheels that would work with used or rejected aircraft tires was profitable when sold for farm use. These aircraft tires were heavy duty and required a heavy duty wheel to complement them. Hey Machinery also stocks and resells many agricultural wheels, rims, and centers. This focus on wheels has led Hey Machinery to adopt the name Hey Wheel.
Timeline...
- 1923: Will Hey started his business in the "old" shop at Ames Street and current County Road 1055. A letterhead dated 1923 said the following: "Will Hey, Dealer in New and Used Machinery of All Kinds." He lists that he deals in traction steam engines, sawmills, tractors, plows, baling pressers, threshers and attachments, boilers, horizontal steam and gas engines, thresher supplies and road machinery. His Bank checks were printed with Will Hey, Dealer in New and Used Machinery.
- 1928: After the Baldwin elevator burned, Will purchased the property located near the train depot as well as the adjacent property. In the summer of 1928, he built and equiped a new elevator. He also put a building on the adjacent property and installed a cider mill. At this time, he continued his farm machinery business in addition to running the elevator and cider mill businesses. His letterhead and checks at this time were printed as "Hey Machinery and Elevator Co., Dealers in New and Used Machinery of All Kinds."
- 1929: He left the elevator business when he decided that he knew more about the machinery business than the grain business. He leased the elevator business and later sold it. He continued his business as "Hey Machinery Company" and a "new" shop was built on the property near the elevator. Starting in mid 1929, "Hey Machinery Company" was printed on Baldwin State Bank checks, letterhead and price lists. He was a very successful McCormick-Deering dealer from the 1930s until WWII.
- 1935: The first airplane tire was put on agricultural equipment.
- early 1950's: Lester and Bill Hey joined their father in the wheel and airplane tire business. The first rim was "rolled" on a wheel machine created by Lester Hey.
- 1962: Hey Machinery Company was incorporated and the current shop building was constructed on the same site as the previous one.
- Late 1960's: The first bolt together wheel was manufactured.
- 2000: The Hey Wheel name was adopted to better describe what Hey Machinery Company, Inc. does.
- 2009: The Hey Machinery and Hey Wheel web site received major updates.
- 2015: The Hey Machinery and Hey Wheel web site received 2nd major update.
